Spader is so unbelievable as a high-school senior that his performance nearly crosses over into farce-maybe it does, the writers left him no choice-but there’s something authentic, nearly gleeful, in his turn as a villainous cad. 19 Leslie Stefanson James Spader pictures. The best of Hughes’s best teen movies-I’m thinking of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-at least tried to charm us, their polished alienation posing as spiky angst, their soundtracks offering the brood and bite that Hughes could not. John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink turns 30 this month, and it has not aged well. Why the gloriously bizarre James Spader is the most intense guy in any room.
